Celebrating Young Writers: Rosie Twinkletoes by P6 Meldrum Primary School

At Meldrum Primary School in West Lothian, Scotland, storytelling has taken an exciting new turn! Over the last year, Primary 6 pupils have worked together to write, refine, and publish their very own story, ‘Rosie Twinkletoes’, which is now available to read on Giglets.

This collaborative project has helped pupils develop key skills in writing, teamwork, and resilience while giving them the opportunity to share their imaginative, humorous, and inspiring story with readers across the country.

Bringing ‘Rosie Twinkletoes’ to Life

It all started with a spark of imagination! Inspired by a Giglets storytelling event featuring the story ‘Tommy Foghorn’, the class set out to create their own unforgettable character. They developed ‘Rosie Twinkletoes’, crafted her story, and worked from first draft to final edits together, ensuring it was engaging, entertaining, and full of personality - just like them!

After winning the storytelling competition, the class partnered with Giglets to transform their comic book-style story - originally captured on video - into a published digital book. They played an active role in shaping the final version, working closely with the team on structure and editing. They also collaborated with Giglets illustrator Graeme Nimmo, providing ample feedback on character development and key scenes to bring ‘Rosie Twinkletoes’ to life.

To celebrate their achievement, the class led special school and community assemblies, where they shared their journey with peers, parents, and special guests. They also created a video showcasing their journey and celebrating their final publication. As a recognition of their work, each pupil received a certificate marking their status as published authors, and the school was awarded a commemorative frame.

The Impact of the Project

Beyond the excitement of publication, this project has had a lasting impact on the pupils and the wider school community. Through the process, pupils have grown in confidence as writers and discovered the power of storytelling. Their journey from idea to publication has not only strengthened their writing skills but also given them a real sense of pride in their achievement.

Primary 6 teacher, Miss Rae who guided the pupils throughout their publishing journey, said, "
This project has been a fantastic way for pupils to see themselves as real writers. They’ve learned how to refine their ideas, work collaboratively, and take pride in their creative voices. Seeing their story published on Giglets has been incredibly exciting - they love that it’s available to other schools and that they can share it with their families at home."

‘Rosie Twinkletoes’ is available on Giglets in both English and Scots, but it was originally written in Scots allowing pupils the opportunity to engage with the language in a meaningful and creative way. By reading and writing in Scots, pupils are strengthening their connection to their cultural heritage.

Headteacher, Mrs Russell, who supported this project from the outset said:

"This project has been inspiring. It has built pupils’ confidence, developed their literacy skills, and given them a platform to share their work with a wider audience. Writing in Scots has been particularly meaningful, strengthening their connection to the language. We’re very grateful to Giglets for giving our pupils this opportunity."

Inspiring the Next Generation of Storytellers

This project is a shining example of how a digital platform like Giglets can support literacy, creativity, and language learning in schools. By sharing their story with other schools, Primary 6 at Meldrum Primary are inspiring young writers everywhere to explore their own ideas, respond to their own reading and experiences and embrace storytelling in all its forms.

Who knows… ‘Rosie Twinkletoes’ might just be the first of many stories to come from these talented young authors!

Giglets regularly hosts events and competitions designed to excite and engage pupils in reading around the country. If the story of Rosie Twinkletoes has inspired you and your pupils, why not enter our Giglets Young Writers of the Year 2025 competition? More information is available here.
